LSJ head on L61? PICTURES AND THE ANSWER

does the LSJ head work on an L61 block??

    here's your answer....

    LSJ head

    L61 head

LSJ has a spot for powersteering (not used on cobalt, blocked off with a removable plate) and another spot for for the cobalts cam sensor, not used on Jbody)

    L61 only has one

the above two pictures is also why the Lsj and L61 valve covers are not interchangable... if it wasn't for that extra hump both would interchange very easily.

    LSJ intake ports

L61 intake ports. note the PCV vent hole is moved (between #2 and #3 cylinders)

whats that mean? jbody manifolds don't work on the LSJ head...

that hole needs to be plumbe into the intake manifold behind the throttle body. some tap work with a metric to -an fitting could do the trick.
another solution would be to use the saab 9-3 turbo manifold... this would work perfectly for this hole...

!!!!the saab manifold I had however will NOT work because I drilled it for the jbody PCV!!!!! (in case you have it and are reading this)

but a new saab manifold will work fine.

L61 cams in the LSJ head also will not work...

the exhaust cam is too short

    ...

the hole here could be filled with a sawed off cam journal so you don't have a critcial loss in oil pressure... or you can use an LSJ exhaust cam (not very wise unless you're boosted since timings are different)

the temperature sensor for the LSJ is mounted by the upper rad hose...

its on the backside of the block on the L61 so nothing is here..

the structure of the head of the L61...

structure of the head on the LSJ.. you can see slight differences, as well as the smooth casting of the LSJ vs the styrofoam look of the L61

where the EGR would be on an LSJ

where the EGR USED to be on the L61 (i cut it off)

    stock picture for reference...

LSJ exhaust ports.. much more meat for port jobs

L61 has very large holes directly beneath the #2 and #3 cylinders so port jobs have to be done carefully, and more conservaitvely.

and finally the block mating surface..

as you see there's little difference between the two other than a few changes in waterjacket shape but otherwise the block is completely compatible.

    PJ... you are THE MAN!

You just answered a question i should have figured out myself....

I didnt even realize that since the l61 doesnt use a egr, then theres no reason why i cant just chop it off.

So now all i gotta do is go have a machine shop make me a bigger drive pulley, up the boost, and add a FMIC. So now i can make some real boost.

I know that wasnt the intentions of the post, but i got somethin out of it

doin what i can with what i got =)

just make sure your header covers up the exhaust side of the EGR port. if it does, you're golden and don't have to worry about it.

if there's a 'tunnel' in the flange for the EGR well.. you'll have an exhaust leak

Im psyched, cus now (although i would love to go turbo)... i simply dont have to, the v-9 should be able to give me the 15psi i want without me hearing a single complaint.

    thanks adam =D

and to kind of add some final points here since I don't really make them obvious:

LSJ head on an L61 block? absolutely possible.
    it was meant to be:
-the L61 powersteering pump bolts into the same spot on the LSJ.

    problems:
-intake manifold (swap to saab 9-3 or custom)
-exhaust cam (run the LSJ exhaust cam, or cut off an unused cam journal to fill the empty slot in the LSJ head. you CANNOT leave this open or else you'll have catastrophic loss of oil pressure)

    theoretical problems:
-second cam flange MIGHT interfere with brake booster

So let me make sure, the stock intake doesnt work because *one* hole doesnt line up or are all of them off? You could just tap into the block for a short bolt there but eh sounds like a problem later down the road

Yeah now that you mention it, I see why I had to customize the gasket that came with the supercharger kit, so it can use that port correctly. Thanks for teaching my something new PJ

one hole that will pour oil everywhere, yes.

you could plug it, but it could cause other problems with the PCV system.
