what year engine can i use

    I have a 2004 Saturn ion 2.2 of course
6 weeks ago i replaced the engine after puncturing the oil pan and locking up the engine.
Well now it rained hard here in Texas and i couldn't avoid deep water and locked up my replacement engine.
    Here is my question...
I see lots of newer engines in newer cars such as 2008-2010 Cobalt, HHR and so on, will they fit a older car like mine or will parts need changed?

Physically they will fit, BUT the crank triggers are different and they will not run w/o considerable work. Ecotec from 02-05 I believe will have what you need.

The '04 Ion Redline uses the P12 ECU which is 58x. That being said, I cant say for certain whether a non-Redline would use a 58x(it does use a different ECM though) but I would check your crank trigger. If you trigger has 7 signal pulses then differ to Cin's post. If it has 58 pulses (basically a lot or a few pulses, there is nothing in between), then you can use one from a newer car.
