    Dune Buggy Engine Swap

    Hey All,

New to the forum and to the Ecotec. I have an old school fiberglass dune buggy with a VW engine. I am building a full tube chasis and going mid travel and want to install an ecotec in it with a VW bus transmission.

I am hoping to find a suitable engine and ECU in one of the junkyards in the LA area (SFV). Looking for information on which engine to select, what car it will come out of, and estimated cost. My offroad shop wants $4,200 for a turnkey brand new 2.2 but I cannot justify the expense.

Initial plans are N/A but will likely install a power adder down the road depending on desert performance.

    thanks in advance

    Welcome.

Nice to see more buggy projects popping up here with Ecos. $4200 you mentioned I assume is the entire buggy and ready to drive. That doesn't sound too bad.

If you want an engine, a L61 (2.2L NA) will be your best bet because of price and availability. The yards are littered with them now a days Good luck with your project.

Thanks for the response. No, the $4,200 is just for the engine and ECU. They are trying to sell me a brand new engine. I don't want to go that route and want to find something out of a junk yard.

A rolling chasis is going to be somewhere around $10K.

Crazy, thanks for the tip. I will start my search for the 03-05 Cavalier

Ecko, that is what I was thinking too which is why I started a search and found this site.

I appreciate the replies and will be a frequent visitor to this site.

What should I expect to pay for a decent low mileage engine?

I paid $300 each for both my 2.2L and my 2.4L both under 30k. Id never pay over $500 for one if it has over 50k on it.

i payed 500 for mine with 75k miles on it but it was seriously the best deal around me. i also added some to the price assuming that he would need all the wiring and engine components like alternator and starter and such
